Nor Zulaila Abd Ghani
38 years old
An environmental-science graduate of mixed Chinese-Malay parentage and a Kajang Municipal Council councillor since 2018, "Lily" Nor Zulaila Abd Ghani (颜丽丽) serves as private secretary to Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong, and stands for DAP in her first electoral attempt.
Background
- Aged 38; a Lenga, Muar native; her father is a Chinese convert to Islam and her mother is Malay; fluent in Mandarin and known as "Lily" with the Chinese name 颜丽丽.[1]
- Schooled at SJK(C) Lenga and SMK Lenga in Muar before earning a bachelor's degree in environmental science from Universiti Putra Malaysia; a Kajang Municipal Council councillor since 2018.[1]
- Brings more than 12 years in public service and government administration, built almost entirely in Selangor: a Subang Jaya Municipal Council councillor's assistant and aide to Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming (2014-2018), special officer to Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan, and coordinator of the Semenyih assembly office (2021-2023).[1][2]
- Private secretary to Liew Chin Tong since 2023, spanning his roles as Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry and later Deputy Finance Minister.[3]
- Argues DAP's image is not an obstacle in a Malay-majority seat, saying voters judge a candidate by sincerity, work record and the ability to solve problems rather than party or race; she frames her pitch around the "Bangsa Johor" identity.[2]
- Her campaign centres on practical local governance: potholes, drains, street lighting, area cleanliness, job opportunities, children's education and the cost of living.[4]
- According to The Merdeka Times, DAP settled on Lily for Tiram after an internal proposal to relocate assemblywoman Marina Ibrahim triggered a controversy.[5]
